Perhaps the remaining three characters are to facilitate retweeting with the prefix "RT" and either a space or colon or some such. A clever touch, really.

Good point – not sure I'd dare manually retweet something that had taken 45 days to compose, but that's social media.

You actually need to leave the spaces whether you retweet with RT or not - built into Twitter now.

Genuine question: should the parantheses have gone before the Question Mark?

The more I look at the tweet the more those isolated brackets unsettle me.

I'd say the brackets are definitely in the right place - so 'How generous!' is a full sentence inserted between the other full sentences and bracketed off as an aside. #grammarofcheese
