On an icy morning I met a mallard, wondering what had made the canal hard.
“Don’t worry,” I said, “It’s just the winter –it makes the water hard to get inter.”

Excellent. Your poem and picture inspired me to write this haiku:
A duck in the dock -
"How do you plead?" said the beak
"I'm not guilty, mallard"

Nice! Feel humbled to have inspired it.
Presumably your mallard is now doing bird.
